Onkanok Takes Clubhouse Lead as Inclement Weather Delays Play at Laem Chabang Country Club

Onkanon who shared the pole position on the leaders’ board along with Chayanit Wangmahaporn at five under in round one fired five birdies against two bogeys on No 6 and 16 plus a double on 18 to lead on six under-par-138. But several players have yet to finish their rounds after lightning threat halted play for two hours. That included 2018 Order of Merit’s winner Arpichaya Yubol who was leading at 18 under with six more holes to play when bad lights forced orgainisers to stop the competition.

The tournament was impacted again by an unplayable situation after being halted by rain on the first day.

Onkanon, in fact, just returned home four days ago after playing a Dream Tour in Korea where the temperature was at only 5 degrees. The highly humid condition on home soil took a toll on her.

“To me, the heat is a big problem as it made me lose my focus. Although I drove the ball well and had good approach shots, I didn’t putt well like I did in the first round,” said Onkanok who mainly plays on the China LPGA, Taiwan LPGA, Dream Tour in Korea and LET .

“I try to arrange my schedule that will allow me to play on different tours. I’m only here for just a week and will go back to Korea next week,” added Onkanok who had to finish her first round play on Thursday’s morning and had only a few hours of rest before round two.

Onkanok will try to have a breakthrough victory on the Thai LPGA Tour. A win on Friday will boost her physiological aspect after posting only one top 20 finish (from five starts) in the Anvaya Cove Ladies International in Taiwan this year.

“Actually, my target this week is just to hit under par each day. With the tough condition this week, my game plan for the final round is to slow things down to stay focused and play at my pace,” she said.

Pakin Kawinpakorn hit a 68 for a total five under-par-139 to sit a stroke back.

The second -round competition will resume at 6.50am on Friday. Only top 60 and ties will move into the final round which will not start before 11am. Play will start in four different holes, No 1, 6, 10 and 15 as organisers hope to have the competition completed before darkness.
